So Obama has released his highly controversial immigration "backup" plan today, and it's met with wide derision from both Republicans and Democrats.
Really with good reason, because well it essentially makes both parties unhappy in the worst ways.
Basically there is token money thrown at border security and Illegal Aliens can be put on the path of citizenship if they can prove residency for 8 years.
At which point they are put at the back of the line for citzenship.
For an example, a current Mexican greencard applicant can be expected to wait 16 years before getting their greencard.... after being approved.
So we're talking 24+ years of being in the country before being made a citizen.
If it were me I would suggest a slightly different compromise.
A) Spend real money to secure the borders enough to impress most Republicans.
B) Make illegal aliens legal citizens no more then 4 years after the boarders have been secured.
I mean I get why people are upset, these people got here illegally, I understand why people wouldn't want them to "jump the line" but at this point they're already here, there isn't much you can do about it.
Furthermore Illegal aliens are counted in the US census like everybody else, so our legal immigration numbers are ALREADY factoring in these illegal aliens. If they weren't here we would be accepting tens of thousands of more people if not hundreds of thousands of more people.
To count these people when talking about letting people in, but not making them citizens is just counter productive.
Really the US should just admit these people more or less "got over" on them, secure the borders. (North and South) and get everybody into the system.
