Sounds like a real mess. I have no idea what the real story is, but I loved Borderlands 2, so I hope the fallout doesn't hurt Gearbox's ability to continue making games.
I'm also always a bit surprised when people are shocked that a game based on a film isn't very good. A property like Aliens, for example, seems like the opposite of how most games are structured. In pretty much all FPS titles, YOU are the badass, but in the Alien world, THEY are supposed to be the badasses. I mean, you watch the movies and it's apparent that the humans should not win. It's always an incredible string of impossibly good luck, which we don't mind because of the whole suspension of disbelief thing, but you put those same elements into a game and you're talking about player death after player death.
So, going in, you have a conflict where the player wants and expects two things at once: that they're going to be hell on wheels like they are in all the other games, and that the Aliens are also going to be borderline unstoppable like they are in the movies. Both cannot be true.
Maybe the next Aliens game should be modeled after Demon's Souls.
