I agree 100%, but it may well be too expensive in Sony's case due to the Cell. And they don't want another PS3-style launch debacle.

But how many consoles does it actually sell I wonder? I would easily pay 100 for it because I could sell my 250gb ps3 for $150 at least towards the new console lol

Yes, that always helps. XD
It's bound to push more people to make the jump, even if just a little. The last thing Sony wants is more people just sitting on their last gen console while waiting for a price cut again. The BC was a key factor for me in getting my PS3, at least.
