I had to educate my mom about some of this recently. Her doctor insisted that she eat a healthier diet--she's only a tad overweight but there are genetic factors--which included cutting back on fat and sugar. She would tell me about something that she bought and I would have to show her how they're using vague language to fool people, like when they say "less fat" without specifying how much less. You really can't trust any of it.
