5,6 and 7 years ago, the xbox was a lot cheaper than the ps3. Why would they ditch their ecosystem they have created on xbox live for a console that was more expensive on first glance than the console they already have? Back then, the choice was simple. 7 years later, it is very hard to justify xbox live when you have other alternatives that do the exact same thing except for free.
Next gen is going to be interesting. Microsoft will need to justify Xbox live even more now that PSN has come along a lot. The premium service Sony provides for $49.99 a year eclipses anything Microsoft can come up with right now.
