It's a PC, and you can't just connect one PC to another via USB... would you expect to be able to plug one Windows laptop into another via a standard USB and just transfer files across? Use a USB drive, skydrive, or any other sync app, treat it like getting files from one PC to another, because that's actually what you're doing.

I know this now as others have mentioned it; I hadn't realized it was a PC.

Wasn't at all caught up on Windows RT vs Windows 8

Skydrive is pretty slick if you decide to go that route (depending on how much data you're transferring and if you need it sync'd). Otherwise a USB drive is your best bet. I have a Surface RT tablet and love it, there's some learning curve because it's so different, but Windows 8 is really great on a touchscreen (and really not too bad with a mouse once you get used to it). The best usage advice I can give is to use the search feature. On the home screen, just start typing if you have a keyboard connected, or swipe in from the right and tap search. You'll search all your apps, files and settings from one place, it makes finding anything a snap.
