46 million people paying for XBox Live?
Sounds like the ultimate slap in the face for anyone who wishes XBL will be free.

At this rate it never will be.

I personally believe they will be using XBL as how you pay for the NeXbox like a cellphone subscription plan with added services like DVR

they already do that with the 360

Yea, it was adopted late though.  I believe this will be right out of the gate, 99$ or even less up front and then pay for it yearly or monthly.  That will be huuuuuge.  I believe XBL will go up in price to $99 a year with a more media hub centric.

P.S. X360 doesnt have DVR like features just yet.  Just a few channels.  I expect that to increase a lot

i think it would be a mistake to make xbox live 99$ a year. have you seen the recent reations of the media lately towards ps+ and xbox live? they basically been slaughtering xbox live and suddenly calling it a rip off, did you read the article about how "ps+ humiliates the indusrty" ? the media backslash for the increase in price would explode, 99$ is A LOT! you also have to consider (and lets be honest here) that most of those people who pay for live do so just to play online. if people see that the price doubled then that might putt them off.

MS have been experimenting with the subscibtion based model though and i wouldnt be surprised to see if they do it with the next xbox, it might actually work too. but they have to play their cards right

I'm just saying that is my prediction. And slaughtering?  No, not even close.  26m users are likely to be paying for XBL right now.  NOw last i had heard PS+ is around 3m.  Now while that was a while ago i dont expect it to be too much more than that now.

But yes  $99 does seem like a lot but what do you think people prefer doing, paying $600 for a console or paying $99 a year? Also this may even be a threat to DVR cable companies.  My cable bill for example is $200 a month which comes out to being $2400 a year.  so $99 a year compared to $2400 a year is pocket change and i would be saving $2300.  Now I dont actually expect to get rid of cable just yet becuase i doubt that it will be that big of a threat to them just yet.  But in time if they get all the channels i want which is bacically AMC, HBO, ESPN, and a few other channels I'm set to go.

Lastly do you realize that a lot of cell phones are around $1000+ in a lifetime?  Whoah right?  I pay $75 a month for my cell phone which is actually cheaper than some plans.  I payed $200 up front and i have to pay for the phone for a two year contract right?  what does that come out to?  $2000.  Now when you take a subscription model it appears better than what it is but to people that $99 will look much better than $600 up front.  $100 a year for a media hub, not bad.

you got me wrong on the slaughtering thing, i didnt mean PS+ slaughtering xbox live. that would be ludacris to even claim. but i ment how the media is reacting now to ps+/xbox live. i was talking about the media, not sales numbers lol

and as i said i think MS will do it. there might be a market for it. but comparing it to cell phones isnt the best comparision. for example when sony released the ps3 for 500/600$ people went crazy over how expensive it was, but then they would gladly go buy an iphone for 700 or 800 bucks. even now people are complaining about how the vita is expensive for 250 bucks but a cellphone for triple the price is normal. same goes for the WiiU. i understand subscibtions for cellphones are extremely expensive in USA in particuler, but cellphones are considered a nessity, gaming isnt. everybody should own a cell phone and use it, its a must for human interaction these days. gaming isnt, so there is a big initiative to buy a cellphone as compared to a game console

but ill say one thing that people here tend to overlook, even though alot of people claim that MS arent bringing anything new to the gaming indusrty by not bringing any new IPs and all that stuff (no need to get into that lol) but they do bring something new and "innovate" in how they sell their console. heck its obvious even sony are starting to learn and their stratgy of selling consoles this year was very much taken out of MS's book. for example the limited edition bundles or instead of cutting the price add two games and 3 months of PSN/xbox live with the console. let third parties push the console for the core market insead of competing with them. all the deals with ubisoft for AC3 bundles and EA for battlefield and fifa bundles are all things sony didnt do until MS did it before them.  my point is, if there is any company that is going to find a new way to sell its console, its probably gonna be MS. they know the US market better than sony and nintendo and they know how to reach that market better. so a subscribition based model for nextbox isnt unlikely, and it being successful isnt unlikely either.

sorry for the very long post btw

Nah i like long posts.  Much better than short ones that really doesnt push a conersation at all lol

I bolded what i agreed with and underlined what i didnt agree with.  I completely agree with phones are now a necessity and games are not but I also dont see people paying $600 for a phone.  now i dont know the numbers but my guess would be that 90% of all phones are sold under a plan.  Which means you are paying anywhere from 0.99c to $300 up front.  I've never seen a phone more than $300 for a phone plan up front and even that is rare.  I think most iphones are around $100(somebody will correct me if i'm wrong).  But really the only reason you buy an unlocked phone is if you break your phone or some other miscellaneuos reason.
