Australia is pretty much the same. In most fields it is about what you know rather than you having a degree. In most white collar jobs people with experience get the job over a graduate from University. There are a few exeptions like Law, Medicine, Engineering and Pharmacy where you need to get the degree.
From what I was told, America is the opposite, education their is valued highly in most white collar jobs. People can't even get a white collar job without a college degree unless they know someone who can get them in.
