For most people in the US, they are of Christian background. When you ask them are they Catholic, Protestant (various options), Islamic, Jewish, other, unclassified, agnostic or atheist, they are answering as in unclassified Christian. Because the options given include agnostic, atheist and other, we can assume they are none of those things. Because they are given multiple classes of Christian, unclassified would be unclassified Christian. You need to remove your own atheistic viewpoint and think in terms of the people answering the question. |
It is that simple. To anyone logical. If the question removed atheism/agnosticism and simply put "other" you wouldn't see any atheists/agnostics choose Christian/Muslim/Judaism whatever.
The ones that chose unaffiliated simply are not affiliated - they are NONE of the religions/non-religions. Meaning, they have their own belief, be it God, Nature, whatever. It really doesn't matter. Don't mistake Christianity for the belief in a God - it simply isn't, that's a very particular sect with a very particular set of beliefs that govern it.
To put it simply, it's most likely a belief in a God, but that's it. No rules and shit. Agree?
