Big difference between unaffiliated and Christian. Just because you don't go to church doesn't make you unaffiliated.
Big difference, but in the context of this poll, they are very likely similar. Due to demographics, the vast majority of people answering that poll would be of Christian decent. Because they are not answering agnostic, they have some religious leaning. They are likely non-church going somewhat spiritual people of Christian culture. This actually describes a very large number of the people I know. |
If you're Christian, you respond as such. If you aren't affiliated with any particular religion, you respond as such - unaffiliated. Simple.
It would only be that simple if we were computers. We're not. To understand human response you need context. You are atheist so you view it in a non-Christian way. For most people in the US, they are of Christian background. When you ask them are they Catholic, Protestant (various options), Islamic, Jewish, other, unclassified, agnostic or atheist, they are answering as in unclassified Christian. Because the options given include agnostic, atheist and other, we can assume they are none of those things. Because they are given multiple classes of Christian, unclassified would be unclassified Christian. You need to remove your own atheistic viewpoint and think in terms of the people answering the question.
