There are plenty of reasons for BC:
1. People trade in the previous console to pay the new one.
2. People didn't own the previous console, but want to enrich the game-library through BC.
3. People that don't want to plug gazillion of devices into their TV and switch between them, only because they feel like playing another game.

Look at it: BC is an added value. For some people - like the author of the article - it is not much value, but for others it holds more value. This value will be counted into the decision to purchase a console or not. So basically manufacturers that leave BC out hurt themself. In which degree is debatable, but the value of the device they offer is lower than with BC included.

exactly why I don't get why multiple SKUs or attachments are available already for it.  I can only hope that Sony has a SKU or attachment for it this upcoming gen because like you said I want to sell my PS3 (probably get around $200 on ebay since it's a 500gb HDD now) and not have to plug in multiple devices and switch HDMI inputs all the time as Sony normally supports their systems a lot.  I just hope they have a lot of storage and/or allow any HDD in PS4 because I've already used around 300gb of that and while I plan to buy as much physical as possible, PS+ will continue to eat up that space lol
