With the PS1, PS2, and PS3 there were additional, technical reasons why to purchase the latest console.  However, the PS4 won't really offer any major advancement over the previous iteration except for graphic fidelity and overall CPU power.  But tech wise, no new optical media as with the PS1, PS2, or PS3.

So what reason is there to buy the PS4?

PS4: Bluray, 4K, last but not least: Gaikai

Bluray still has not won over dvd so you can't expect them to come with something new.

The next Xbox will also feature Blu-Ray (note the correct usage of the trademark), 4K video/TV, and cloud-based gaming.  Not that the latter will really be a strong selling point, despite what you think.   Likewise, if Blu-Ray hasn't replaced DVD, than I doubt next generation it will either due to the fact that digital distribution is becoming so popular for TV and movies.

The only thing I have heard so far, for a credible reason to buy a PS4, is if you're already into Sony exclusive games.  One reason.  It's not a bad reason, but there's got to be more than that one reason.

What is exciting people about the PS4?

Before the PS3 was released there was a LOT of excitement about the PS3.  I'm not feeling ANY of it with the PS4.

Then digital distribution is the next big thing of the PlayStation family.
