We recently discovered that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in it's North American stronghold in January. Whilst this was a surprise to those that regularly view VGChartz numbers, it was not completely unexpected due to the numerous reportings of significant Elite model shortages and severe Premium model shortages. However, what is confusing is the reasons behind these shortages.

Some on this site are willing to put them down to Microsoft underestimating demand this January after overestimating demand last January. But given the strong demand over the holiday season, and the fact that these consoles are by now easy for Microsoft to produce, not to mention the severity of the shortage, I have my doubts.

I think it is quite possible that Microsoft is letting the channel dry up in order to put in place a new model or bundle, perhaps even a smaller Xbox 360 in the near future. It would make sense as it is now some time since the console launched, and significant cost and size cuts must surely have been made by now.

Does anyone agree with me? Why or why not? Care to speculate as to what exactly Microsoft have planned for their console?
