| Max King of the Wild said: So I was playing GoW:GoS trying to platnium it when my wife comes in the room as I'm getting to Sparta. She sees that and makes a comment about brothels and I say "That's funny because I'm about to go to one" since one of the trophies I need is beating the sex minigame 3 times in a row to get the item. She flips the fuck out and says I can't play it anymore because it makes women an object. I was shocked at this. I told her I'm a damn grown up and can make choices of what I will and will not play. I also told her that we are all mature adults here and can handle a sex scene. I then asked her if we need to get rid of 300/dirty harry or other movies that show titties and has sex scenes. She said it was different because it is a video game. I responded that it's just another medium for entertainment and you can't apply a rule to one and not the other. She has since taken the game and hid it somewhere.... I have made sure she knows that I will be purchasing the new God of War in March and I will not stop playing these games and if she is going to restrict me then we are going to have some problems. Has this happened to anyone else? *EDIT* - I have also pointed out she had no problem with things such as 50 shades of Grey. She read through the first book and thought it was poorly written and terrible so she wont read the other two but the concept was intriguing to her. (If people don't know what it is about I'll just say there is a part in the book that talks about anal fisting). I said the book was a lot more explicit, graphic and vulgar. She has also read a play by the Greek Aristopheles which talked about anal gaping, whores, getting blow jobs from men, and a lot other (again) explicit, graphic and vulgar parts. |
Clearly she's not a prude, which makes her a hypocit. But you should try to bring her to an understanding of this gently rather than arguing and pouting about it. Best if you take the moral high road and be the adult in this scenario and open her eyes to her hypocrisy gently. Otherwise even if she does come to accept your PoV she may resent the approach you took to getting your way.
Of course the counter argument is that perhaps the sexually explicit stuff she likes / has watched/read always has the man / men and woman / women entering into the sex on equal terms. So even something as painful sounding (and gross) as anal fisting, if it's done on equal terms is sociologically better than Kratos having "regular" sex with prostitutes.
So if the basis for her objection is not the explicit nature of the sex but the treatement of women then the conversation has to be different and you can't simply point out that she likes to watch and read things with explicit sexual content. It could be worth pointing out that Kratos never forces himself on women so despite there being prostitution in GoS and in Chains the women were proobably deathly afraid of being raped by the Persians (which means it's unreal that they'd then be all hot and heavy for Kratos) the sex mini games are in the grey area when it comes to sociological objectification of women. In all the other GoW games the women do all want Kratos so it's on equal terms, and in GoW III it's almost the other way around: Aphrodite essentially calls into question Kratos' manhood if he doesn't get it on with her.
