SEGA was always my favorite dev back in the day. I was a total fanboy and i still think i was completely right. SEGA made incredible games by the dozen back then, and the loss of them as first party and hardware developer is probably gamings biggest loss and i somewhat resent everybody that didnt buy a dreamcast for it. The system was great, ahead of its time and had an incredible library of games, but the casuals didnt care.
With that said, personally i have no such hopes. Today's SEGA is nowhere near the levels of excellence that old SEGA had. Most of the talent left or was shoved aside (Yu suzuki). Basically they only have Yakuza team and Sonic Team left (i guess and Phantasy star team and shining team assuming those arent part of the other 2 anymore).
Their games are nowadays largely uninspired, though not terrible. Their financial results weak.
SEGA is not making a comeback to the hardware business in the foreseable future. Its a tough and unforgiving market, wich is why they had to leave in the first place. Even if they released a system now, they wouldnt have the development capabilities of a first party as they were heavily downsized.
As much as i love SEGA of old, i dont want a new console from them to be true at this time cause i know it wont be the same anymore. SEGA of old is dead and its not coming back.
In the future? Who knows? Maybe Nintendo pairs up with SEGA to release a new console and revive its IP's. Actually, i think they should buy SEGA and get those exclusive SEGA IP's on the Wii U. It would help loads. One thing is for sure, SEGA alone is no longer capable of developing and launching a console by themselves.
