I actually enjoyed both Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, although I enjoyed XIII more. The combat of the XIII series is probably one of my favorites in the FF franchise, and the linearity of XIII never really bothered me (and this is coming from someone who enjoys open world RPGs like The Elder Scrolls series). Final Fantasy XIII-2 scoring in the 5 range made it seem like it was worse than the average game (according to GamrReview's review methodology), and I personally don't agree that it was that low in quality.
