I was pretty hard on my tablet when I first got it, and it's still working perfectly fine. If you feel uncomfortable with the amount of pressure you're using, you can always adjust it in the Wacom Tablet Properties utility. In Windows, I generally have my Intuos set right between "Soft" and "Firm." It sounds like your tip feel may be a bit on the firm side.
