The author and source must have ignored the quarterly financials.
As far as the reason given that MSFT wanted to get into the games business to combat Sony, that might very well be true. Companies often see others as a threat and decide to just get into the business and worry about the numbers at a later point. Even so, MSFT has done well for itself in the games arena, nobody can take that away from them.
