I'm an old school adventure gamer going all the way back to the text-based games on early PCs.
The genre never died - completely - it did go underground and was more female focused on PC for quite a while.
There was already a resurgence afoot long before The Walking Day with TellTale reviving the Sam & Max franchise on PC and Wii. Wii was the first console where point and click adventure games 'worked' and was home to many from TellTales new Tales of Monkey Island to classics like Broken Sword to ports of Nancy Drew, So Blonde, Secret Files and many others. 360 and PS3 eventually got into the action as well and finally took over from the waning Wii.
Tablets and smartphones are now getting into the action as well and will likely spur the growth even more, as they are an ideal format for these types of games.
