...just back out to XMB regularly and back-up the save, if you die, restore the back-up and resume.  Alternatively, as you die quit to XMB, though depending hen it begins to auto-save this may have risks.

Either way open to abuse.

I'll rent Dead Space 3 only, sadly the online trophies will deny me a platinum for it due to online pass.

True. So in the end, maybe Dead Space 2 would still be the harder one...

And pity there's no local co-op. Gotta have the online pass and find someone to do the Carver missions.
