The only reason it would need power similar to the other next gen consoles is for ease of third-party porting, but frankly I don't think Nintendo would get the third party support even if they did match the other's power.
So no, it doesn't need the power, unless you were planning on replacing the other consoles libraries with just a Wii U (and if you were, you're obviously a die-hard Nintendo fan and would buy a Wii U regardless. So no it absolutely doesn't need the power).
