Here is what I run.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials/Microsoft Defender (Windows 8)
I use IE 9/10 with an Ad blocker.
I use µTorrent for torrents.
For starters, run HitManPro 3.7. You must be connected to the Internet while it runs. Download it from here:
http://www.surfright.nl/en
You'll be given the option of running it for a single instance, or paying for a license and using it as your default AV software, just use it for a single instance.
Keep a copy of this on a USB stick, if you ever get infected it will become invaluable.
Backup any of your personal data before you run the scanner. Though take note if any of your personal data files are infected when the scanner does run. If there is an infection of your Master Boot Record (MBR) it's possible to lose everything on the drive. So take time to backup your data.
Next, unless you have an immediate need for Java, uninstall Java. The US Department of Homeland Security is currently advising all US computer users who do not need to have Java installed or running to either disable or uninstall Java. You can disable it through the Java control panel or Uninstall it through the Add Remove Programs/Programs and Features control panel.
Next, uninstall any toolbars, especially if you don't need or use them.
Finally, the next time you are prompted to update your "movie player" don't. A very sophisticated bit of malware is going around masquerading as a Flash Update. Don't fall for it.
