I played 1, 2 and 3 days after each other in that order for the first time and in general:
GoW1 had the best "story"
GoW2 had the best "adventure feel"
GoW3 had the best bosses
I'd choose 3 as the best due to its raw epicness. After that, I really love GoW1s story and how it ends with Kratos sitting as the God of War. GoW2 was a real ass adventure though. I think I'd say GoW3>GoW2>GoW1
Whats great is that Ascension is appearing to incorporate the best of each game.
As for Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus that I played after the original 3, I'd rate both after GoW1. They are not as good as the mainline series in my opinion. Chains of Olympus is the weakest and Ghost of Sparta HAS some amazing moments that can put it up to GoW1 and GoW2 in my opinion but overall: I wouldnt say it does.

GoW3>GoW2>GoW1>GoW GoS>GoW CoO for me.
