You just proved my point. Tetris was bundled with the Game Boy and when it wasn't bundled did little to the NES. When Nintendo was threatened all-around by competition by the wonderswan and by the Playstation, the one thing that kept it in the game was Pokemon.

A core game.

My point is that no matter whether the game is aimed at casuals or at the core crowd, what matters is that the game touch a cord with everyone, so much that everyone needs to have it. And these trends change over time.......

To ask Nintendo to continue exploiting treasures they found in one era is often a bad idea, since these treasures are fleeting and they need to be on the lookout for the next  culturally-relevant idea.

I'm sure fashion has a similar concept...

Don't be ridiculous. It's common knowledge that Tetris is what drove GameBoy sales at launch, and for years after. The GameBoy owes the bulk of its popularity to that launch title -- a launch title that deserves to be mentioned in the same breathe as Super Mario Bros. and Wii Sports. By comparison, Pokémon was just a late-cycle phenomenon that prolonged the GameBoy's life. Sure, modern Nintendo handhelds live and die by Pokémon, but things were different in the early 90s.
