Considering the sales, it wouldn't be all that surprising if true. If the 3DS version's sales didn't merit continued support, then it only makes sense as the Wii U's Madden sales were even worse.
To compare to other new consoles first Madden after 9 weeks in the USA.
360: 313,817
PS3: 222,265
3DS: 32,231
Wii U: 21,169
To put it in further perspective for legs. In weeks 8&9 (January for both) the PS3 version sold 32,599 the Wii U version sold 964. 3281% higher, it even managed to sell 54% more than the Wii U one has LTD.
It just doesn't seem financially viable.
