There are some people who think violence in any entertainment is contributory to violence in society, and they think video games are particularly bad because of the deeper immersion. That's a fine hypothesis, but research is required before you start making social policy on it. It is a pretty widely accepted notion that there is some stuff in entertainment that kids should not be exposed to, and perhaps in certain younger age groups violence in entertainment is detrimental to their developing psyche's and emotions. But the research needs to be done to know what's damaging and what's fairly benign.
