Part of the problem would be to find characters that are not redundant in abilities. I honestly don't know enough about the PS franchises to comment much on those who have popped up (wouldn't it be better to pair up Ratchet/Clank and Jax/Dexter ala the Ice Climbers?).
Anyway, I'd add in:
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro
One of the leads from RE (Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield)
The clown charcter from Twisted Metal
Of course, if you are really trying to ape Smash Bros, all the characters would have to be Sony exclusives, as all the Smash characters are Nintendo exclusives. OK - Snake and Sonic have opened the door to 3rd parties, but that's just 2 characters out of dozens that have been available over 3 different titles.
