Final Fantasy IX.
I love Final Fantasy as a series, but some of the storylines are either too convoluted (FFX and its ending), bland (looking at you XII), and amateurish (I don't know if it was due to bad localization efforts or it being an SNES game but some of the dialogue in FF3/6 was just laughable). For the record, I love and have beaten all of the games above (among others in the series), so I'm not trying to troll here.
Just felt IX did what the others could not do when it came to story. It maintained a very balanced approach with its simple yet warm narrative and sympathetic cast of characters.
