The obvious solution is to not make drugs worth fighting over by legalising them.

You do realize that some of the drugs people have been killed over are prescription drugs, right?  Legalizing drugs isn't going to stop people from dying over them, especially when they need their fix and don't have the money to purchase or acquire them legally i.e. a doctor's prescription.

The solution then would just be to de-regulate the distribution of all drugs, but big pharma would *hate* it.

Actually something i could get behind, namely that you can't patent a distinct chemical compound.

Think how much cheaper drugs would be, even if they still could patent distinct chemical compounds, but they were producing them for the mass market.

The issue with not allowing them to patent it is... who's going to make new drugs?

It's sort of like Textbooks.  The US allows the biggest prophet, and coincidentally most textbooks are made in the United States... even a LOT of europeon textbooks are adapted from US textbooks or even just are US textbooks with the words "International Edition" slapped on the front of it.

Without the US as the big money market we might see a big drop in pharmecutical research.
