Well, you could have 1 trillion earth-like planets and still the most intelligent animal in the planets is less intelligent than regular cat (excluding earth of course). Remember, current people have only existed minimal amount of time on earth (99,99% of the time earth would have seemed without intellegent life) and even on earth life itself was very lucky co-incidence. Life itself is not unlikely, you might have trillions of planets with life, but you could search millions (and even billions) of planets with any living organisms without having any life which has alien with anything similar intelligence to human.
