As for why we glorify violence/ it's so prevalent in media...
It's the purest form of competition. Other forms of competition were basically created to simply find a way to have battles without injuring other too badly/even playing fields.
We mostly want to see and watch competition, hence why the vast majority of video games... have a goal with a challenge. Few are like MS paint, or even Wii Music.
Even games like minecraft through monsters your way to keep you interested.
