I guess they are as sure as they can be. They saw it happen so they are the best to know what happened. The camera did show the hawk swoop in and fly away. Hawks usualy win in those situations.

If you watch it on a big enough screen, you can see the mouse run across the street and into the hawk's clutches.  I think the mouse loved the human so much that he didn't want to live without him.  The best love story since Twilight.
