Apparently homicide rates per capita are back down to 60's levels, however looking at the discrepancy relating to violent crimes as a whole, I wonder if that's because a lot of what was going to be considered murder or manslaughter end up as "undisclosed". It's reasonable to argue we are much less likely to condemn someone for homicide without proper proof than 50 years ago. Still there is a downwards trend running in the last two decades.

Edit: but instead of being mostly because of social measures like I suspected, the artile mentions the increase in the number of cops, aging demographics and expanded prision populations. Oh well.
