I think the biggest thing one needs to understand before playing an Atelier is not to an expect a "OMG You're the hero, the one and only one to save us from X, X ,X ,X ,X"
It's really just a casual game with everyday problems like rebuilding a shop or something. I personally like that they don't take themselves too seriously, and are more about good fun.
