Shruikan said: Japan and China are not going to go to war with each other. It's all talk. And people are vastly overestimating China's military capacity. Despite what earlier posts said, neither of these two nations are superpowers militarily. China has immense personnel at its disposal, but is pretty far behind in terms of military technology. The biggest reason they won't go to war is that it wouldn't be economically viable for either nation to do so.

Sorry don't mean any disrespect but the thinking of China being technologically backward is just typical ignorant western thinking.(which will cost us a lot when we get into conflict with them) Most of their fighters are modified/improved 4th and 4.5 generation derived flankers/Migs from Russia, capable of BVR weapons, fire and forget missles (the Japanese F15's have to think about whether they want to lock their target or avoid an incoming rocket that the J11's and J10's are capable of firing and avoiding at the same time), and stealth technology derieved from the F22 through espionage. They are a dangerous threat!!!

China isn't a threat to the west militarily. First of all their military /is/ quite backwards when compared to the US, Russia, and European nations. Why would they attack someone who buys all their stuff in any case?
Also look at China's history. They aren't exactly a nation that is known to expand when given the chance. Back in the 15th century China had the capacity to control the entire Indian ocean, but they didn't. In any case, this is a dispute between China and Japan, and it's nothing more than a war of words. The most it'll escalate to is more words and military exercises to 'flex their muscles.'
This also isn't a new issue. They've been at each other for a long time over those islands, just now it's getting media attention so everyone's suddenly become an expert in Sino-Japanese relations. Being blown /way/ out of proportion.
