In the case of Sony..yes it definitely is. I know people will lose jobs and it's regretabble but from a business point of view they are too big so to speak. The focus is all over the place and that hurts their individual divisions. This is why Kaz is mainly focusing on 3 divisions and cutting the fat so to speak. This should also help cut down on their R&D expenses too which was out of control the last time I read about it. Investors have no reason to lose faith if the moves are going to work best for the company in the long run. Kaz mentioned about having a better focus in several interviews at CES too. He has the right idea
