That article doesn't give the entire story either. I'm sure a lot of those who are working as janitors with PhDs are foreigners. I remember hearing how medical doctors in the Philippines are coming to the US because they can make more money at a lower job level. Immigrants with an education are at a huge disadvantage. But if that is what happened with the 5k janitor positions I'm sure they really aren't regreting it too much considering they are probably making more doing that than they would in their country |
Obviously, there are some, but the college based meritocracy is collapsing on itself in modern times ...
My sister has a Masters degree in English and used to work at a book store and I met many of her co-workers there. At the time, most of her co-workers had bachelors or masters degrees in the humanities or social sciences. There are lots of jokes about where you find people with advanced degrees in many fields, and most of them are menial jobs, and they're funny because there is a truth to them.
