Decent chance it might do well over there if it has good fighting game mechanics (Not just recognisable characters). Believe me Japan is the land of fighting games. Like 90% of the fighting games ever produced is in Japan and people over there love to play them highly competitively. So if PSABR has good mechanics to be played competitively, it might have some legs over. I personally don't know, so someone who has played the game could comment on its mechanics. I'm hoping its not a carbon copy of SSBB.

It is very different from Smash and designed with competitive play in mind. Most people either love it or hate its mechanics.
Personally I think Kat might be out when the game comes out so she could even be included on the cover. Might do ok.

No, it's not designed with competitive play in mind. If it was I could play 1v1 online without having to add someone to my friend's list. :)

It's designed for 2v2! Regardless, they are patching in 1v1 online just to make you happy :)

Do you have a link to where they say that they're adding 1v1 via patch? Haven't heard anything about it. That's good if it's true, but if they were really making it for the competitive community that should have been in there from day one. Honestly, how can you say that your game is made for the competitive community, and then limit the ranked mode to FFA battles? Anyone who has been around the fighting game community should know that 1v1 is the standard, even in games like Smash which do allow for 2v2.
Honestly, I can't really see how PSASBR is any more competitive than Smash. Combos seems to be the only thing that might make it so.
