NPD used to be predicting 2016 as the year of this transition, so this is happening much faster than anticipated. I initially assumed because it was NPD that they were only concerned with the NA market, but it seems this is a prediction of worldwide shipments. In fact, tablet shipments in NA and China in 2012 have already exceeded laptop shipments.
NPD's projections are for 240 million tablet shipments this year, compared to 207 million laptop shipments globally.
