mariage with 12-14 years (and consummation) was pretty much standard throughout europe even with christianity in place - from our point of view that is pedophilia

I always though marriages/unions back in classical/ancient times was because Life expectancy was lower than what it is now.

well, yes life expectency was at about ~35 years I guess, so that's a big factor, but ofcourse thats just an average that is brought down by ~40% of the people dieing before they became adults (most at birth-> reaching age of 5)

after that they probably mostly reached their 40-50th birthday
