that is something i never really understood, maybe you can explain it. let's say it will be out for nextbox and only one year later for ps4, if i want to have a patched version for nextbox, i just wait until i get the patched version, pay probably much less then because the game is already discounted and get it still earlier or at least at the same time the ps4 will get it without discount and maybe with new problems (save problems or something) which have to get patched. |
Microsoft stopped doing it with the 360, probably because of the cost involved, but also because Sony countered by requiring any late ports to contain added value and to be the definitive version. Basically, Sony told developers that they would only approve the game when it came to their system if it was markedly superior to the 360 version. Consumers noted this after awhile, and with the idea that a better version would come later, a lot of people didn't mind waiting. In that regard, I think Microsoft's 1-year timed exclusive push turned into something of a marketing failure, given the expense. As the installed base for the PS3 increased, the amount of money Microsoft would need to convinced publishers to ignore the PS3 would have to grow as well.
The timed exclusive DLC seems to be a better deal for them, honestly, and I expect them to continue putting their money in that system.
