I don't think there's any chance of it happening. The 3DS would need a phenomenal boost. To put it into perspective, the DS post-lite didn't drop under 510,000 a single month in 2006. Meanwhile, the 3DS in 2012 only surpassed 410,000 twice - in November and December.

I think even matching the DS' 2007 - at 7.2 million - is going to be a very hard stretch.

I do remember well the timeframe you're referring to.  Every week like clockwork the DS/ Lite was selling 150k /week for well over a year straight.  There were even articles written at the time where people were saying you'd be hard-pressed to find someone out and about in Japan who didn't have a DS on them.

We'll see how 2013 shakes out for 3DS.  In order to have a chance at even matching DS sales, (let alone surpassing it) the 3DS will need to sell in excess of 150k per week for a sustained period of time, and the holiday season would have to be absolute gangbusters.

It is possible, though.  Monster Hunter/ Shin Megami/ Luigi's Mansion/ Pokemon/ Dragon Quest.  Surely to be the 3DS's biggest year in Japan by far.  Not mention what are sure to be very long legs for Animal Crossing.  I think that game will sell well into the spring, helping keep 3DS numbers up on off-weeks when no new titles are released.
