Heavy rain is not really an adventure game, more like a sub-genre interactive movie like The walking dead.
An adventure game is a video game in which the player assumes the role of protagonist in an interactive story driven by exploration and puzzle-solving instead of physical challenge.
The exploration is the part where games like Heavy rain and The walking dead deviate, and puzzle solving usually plays a much bigger part in adventure games. Monkey island series, Myst/Riven series, Grim fandango, and more recently Machinarium are classic adventure games.
It's a hybrid I guess with 70% interactive story, 15% exploration, 15% puzzle solving.
Ace attorney and Layton are considered more to be of the puzzle sub-genre.
They are as far apart as Call of Duty and Borderlands when it comes to fps.
