Just want to hilight this and mention how amazing it is. It may not be entirely true... I think that Sony may not feel particularly "successful" with the PS3 given how much money they lost on it in its early years, not to mention losing so much of their market share from the PS2, but its software sales in the past few years have helped turn its fortunes around. I think the console has redeemed itself.
But it's very impressive for all three major companies to have been, in their own ways, successful in the same generation on almost all fronts. I don't think this has ever happened. In the end, it was a great generation for the industry as a whole, and for the major players in it individually.
