I'd actually like to know the metric used here... below expectations by whose standards? The analyst's? Gamestop's?

The only expectations that matter are Nintendo's and we won't know that 'til March.

That said, the Wii U is in for a rough time in Q1. Nintendo needs to announce *something*. Just give us a glimpse of what's coming out. Right now, I know I'm only buying two games for the Wii only: Monster Hunter 3G Ultimate and Rayman Legends. I'd really like to know what's coming out for the rest of the year. Granted, we do have E3 for that, but a few trinkets of info would really go a long way.

And the usual suspects are overreacting as usual. And some of you are downright hypocrites. Why is the Vita allowed a full year before being a failure/doomed but the Wii U is given a month? Nevermind that the Wii U has had better launch performance than the PS3 and 360 so far. You guys really need to lay off this fanboy stuff and be objective every once in a while.

There is something I personally find interesting when looking at the 3DS and PS-Vita when considering the next generation of systems. Both systems started out rather slowly but Nintendo demonstrated a willingness to do whatever it takes to make the 3DS successful while Sony was unwilling or unable to make similar choices for the PS-Vita. With this in mind, people are under the impression that Nintendo is the one who will be unable to react to (potentially) a slow start with the Wii U, while Sony will launch cleanly and be able to do whatever it takes to make the PS4 a success.

At the moment we don't know whether the Wii U will meet Nintendo's expectations by March 31st, but I think it is a fairly safe bet that Nintendo will do whatever it takes to make the Wii U meet their expectations in the following fiscal year. If Nintendo releases several big games and slashes the price of the Wii U it could see a similar large sales boost as the 3DS, and if Sony struggles with the PS4 (the way they did with the PS-Vita) they could fall far behind
