It's quite possible that Satan was a scapegoat. In fact, a lot of what the bible says about not listening to the devil and that he is the father of lies sounds suspiciously like poisoning the well. Truth be told, god and/or his agents have gone so far in prejudicing the jury that any fair trial would likely need to be moved to another jurisdiction or perhaps thrown out entirely. Can you imagine how hard it would be to find an impartial jury to hear Satan's alleged crimes?
Not that god is every likely to allow a fair trial. He would only stand to lose if Satan was allowed to speak in his own defense. No, that would never happen, which is why Hell is actually god's version of Guantanamo Bay.
Really, I'm not even sure what the devil did that was so horrible. Overthrowing dictators is something we usually celebrate. Maybe it was time for a changing of the guard? Maybe Satan was Denzel Washington to god's Gene Hackman and had no choice but to go Crimson Tide on his ass.
The sad thing is that we'll probably never know, not as long as god has the media in his pocket.
