Nintendo's console record is around 6 years between releases. They're at the peak output resolution that will be around for at least another 6-10 years as the norm, 1080p. I feel like a parrot repeating this, but it doesn't seem to sink in - the jump from xbox to 360 or ps2 to ps3 or wii to wiiU was a far greater jump than anything we'll see until 1080p is no longer the run of the mill for HDTVs. The PS4 and XB720 will look only slightly better than the WiiU, so the graphics won't be that outdated.
If you think about it, they're taking the PS2 approach - come out first, slightly less powered than the rivals, but establish a solid base before the rivals hit the market. Worked pretty well for Sony back then.
