Sales have nothing to do with a game being overrated. A game is overrated if it's rated better than it should be. With that said, since GT5 is the worst rated main Gran Turismo game. So, using your own measures for how it should be rated (not being the best game in the franchise), its rating is actually similar to what you think it should be.

Overrated means review only based? first Ive heard. I always thought overrated comes from fans/popularity, elevating a game via sales to levels it may not deserve. Like COD is now getting metacritics in the 80's but is still being bought by the tens of millions. Thats being overrated. Your logic would say that COD is a 70's franchise and is thus overrated. I just think the term overrated always referred to fans rating and praising a game more then deserved.

People say CoD is overrated because its rated higher than what they think it should be, not because its popular. A game is overrated based on ratings, hence why its called overrated. I would never say its overrated because people enjoy it. Just like you don't hear people calling Twilight overrated. Even though its popular, its ratings are already crap. It's not rated highly, so there's no point in calling it overrated.
