i don't know why they need so much RAM, they have been fine with 512mb for the last 6/ 7 years. Even on PC, most games don't need more than 3gb or 4gb so far

So far, yes. But we're talking about systems that aren't yet released and will be expected to last for at least 5 years. Able to run engines such as the latest Cry Engine, Unreal 4, and S-E's Luminous. Able to support the latest Direct X/OGL features. And of course, all of this at (finally) true-HD resolution, 1080p, while maintening a framerate as smootyh as possible, be it locked at 30 with no drops, or steady at 60. That's not mentioning 3D support.

Now, since it's pretty obvious that the money is made from the console versions of their games (mostly), I can understand why third party developers wish that they could make their vision come true on consoles that have as much under their hood as possible.

It just seems like a bit ridiculous to jump from 512mb to 8gb, but if it benefit our games then why not i guess. I personally don't care if graphics get any better for now, i just want better physics and more specific detail in a game now. But i guess they would need 8gb if they want to support 4k resolution on the PS4 as well
