Yes the mayan where very excited about this date and would have had massive ceremonies and sacrifices. They also had a sink whole near their village in which they sacrificed children to appease the rain god. So to take them seriously might be going to far. We have just ended the 13th baktun and entered the 14th baktun. A baktun is 144,000 days long.
The Mayan calendar system places its zero day in 3114 BCE and repeats after 5125 years - in 2012. The completion of 13 Baktuns marks the Creation of the world of human beings according to the Maya. These cycles of creation and destruction can be thought of as stages, or harmonics, of evolution.
According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts, we where living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 14th baktun. Thus, 2012 begins the fifth world.
This stage is the evolution to better ways and ideas.
